The 4 Cs - A Modern Guide

Understanding Universal Diamond Standards

The journey to selecting an exceptional diamond begins with understanding four fundamental characteristics that determine beauty and value for both mined and laboratory-grown diamonds.

These attributes - Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity - form the universal language of diamond evaluation established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Each characteristic applies identically to diamonds regardless of origin, as both types share the same crystal structure, chemical composition, and optical properties.

Carat Weight: Measuring Diamond Mass

Carat represents a diamond's weight, with one carat equaling precisely 200 milligrams.

This measurement standard remains consistent across all diamonds, whether formed deep within Earth or created through HPHT and CVD processes.

While larger diamonds command attention due to their visual impact, carat weight alone never determines ultimate beauty or value.

A smaller diamond with superior cut quality exhibits more brilliance than a larger stone with inferior proportions, regardless of origin.

The optimal carat weight balances personal preference, setting design, and the other three quality factors.

Cut: The Architecture of Brilliance

Cut stands as the most critical factor determining any diamond's light performance, transforming rough crystal into spectacular brilliance and fire.

The GIA grades cut quality from Excellent to Poor, evaluating proportions, symmetry, and polish with scientific precision.

Ideal proportions are derived from a combination including table percentage, depth percentage, and crown angles. When these measurements align perfectly, light enters through the table, reflects internally, and returns as maximum brilliance.

Both mined and laboratory-grown diamonds achieve identical light performance when cut to the same specifications.

Diavaia's Vault Selection features only diamonds showcasing the most optimal cut grades across our complete 1.3+ million stone inventory.

Color: The Spectrum of Purity

Diamond color grading measures the absence of body color within the stone, with the GIA scale ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown).

For mined diamonds, this traditional GIA scale continues unchanged, while laboratory-grown diamonds will transition to premium and standard categories by late 2025.

D through F grades represent colorless diamonds exhibiting extraordinary transparency and maximum light transmission.

G through J grades offer near-colorless appearance, providing exceptional value while appearing colorless to untrained observers.

Laboratory-grown diamonds consistently achieve higher color grades due to controlled growth environments, with most falling within D-G range.

Diavaia's ASET imaging database for 45,000 laboratory-grown diamonds provides unprecedented transparency in evaluating both color and light performance.

Clarity: Evaluating Internal Characteristics

Clarity assesses internal inclusions and external blemishes that occur during diamond formation.

The GIA clarity scale progresses from Flawless through the following grades:

Flawless (FL) - No inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification

Internally Flawless (IF) - No inclusions and only blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10× magnification

Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) - Inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10× magnification

Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) - Inclusions are minor and range from difficult to somewhat easy for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification

Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) - Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10x magnification

Included (I1, I2, and I3) - Inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance

Laboratory-grown diamonds typically exhibit fewer inclusions due to controlled growth conditions, often achieving VVS1 to VS2 grades.

Natural VS1 and VS2 diamonds offer optimal balance, featuring characteristics invisible to the naked eye while maintaining accessible price points.

Diavaia's advanced imaging technology provides detailed clarity mapping for informed selection across both diamond categories.
